PE and Sport Premium funding set to continue for 2019-20
The Department for Education has this week confirmed that it will fund the Primary PE and Sport Premium, at the doubled rate of £320 million nationally, for another academic year.
This will come as welcome news for Heads and Governors of Schools and Academies looking to maximise their budgets and use PE, Sport and Physical Activity as a tool for both whole school development and targeted intervention for those most in need.
The Association for PE (afPE). were amongst the first to break the news with its CEO Sue Wilkinson MBE quoted as saying, “afPE is delighted that the DfE has confirmed the future investment for Primary PE and Sport”. She went on to say that, “we now have substantial evidence that clearly demonstrated that investing in the school workforce is one of the most effective ways of ensuring all children and young people increase their confidence, competence and academic achievement.”
Youth Sport Trust Chief Executive Ali Oliver also commented this week, "This funding brings with it a huge amount of potential to improve children's formative experiences of PE at primary school but it will be vital that it is spent in the right way. We want to see every primary school teacher professionally supported to develop young people's physical literacy with the same skill and passion as language literacy and numeracy."
Totally Runable’s Natalie Jackson said, “This really is great news for the schools and academies we work with, allowing Senior Leaders and their PE Coordinators and support staff to review their current plans and look ahead to next year. All of our courses and bespoke help for schools look to support their wider plans, include real and relevant data and stories to enhance impact reporting, and work with school staff to ensure sustainable positive impact.”
Further guidance and a School Sport Action Plan is expected from the Government soon.
Following this week’s announcement Totally Runable are offering 5 schools in Barnsley a free PE, Sport and Physical Activity Review to help plan ahead. If your school or a school you know would be interested please call 01226 982516 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
