Beginner runners wanted in Barnsley

Exciting news! We’ve launched a new online course in Barnsley aimed at helping 18-25 year old women get active. Our Co-founder (and former Team GB Olympian) Emily Freeman is heading up the campaign in South Yorkshire, as one of 7 physical activity based projects across the country addressing physical activity levels post-lockdown.

Our Barnsley project is looking for women aged 18-25 who would love to complete a 5k in 8 weeks but aren’t sure they can. They will take part in a free 8 week online course that will take them from inactivity to completing a 5k run/walk. A group of up to 20 women will be chosen to take part in the course, and to give feedback about it to the national research.

Former athlete Emily said “we know how hard it can be to start running, but we also know that there are so many women who’d love to give it a go. This will be an opportunity to do that with expert help and a friendly online group of women all taking on the same challenge. We’ll meet online for an hour a week for a fun session of non-physical ‘mindset’ training, and to catch up and hear how everyone is getting on.”

Natalie Jackson, co-founder of Totally Runable, took up running as an adult. She said, “prior to the lockdown, we have spent 5 years running this course in person, so we know it works and will give women all the tools they need to start running. What it gives that other similar courses don’t is everything I needed when I first started. I wasn’t confident about my physical ability and I definitely didn’t think of myself as a ‘runner’. Having someone understand that and design a course around building my confidence and mindset, to learn I could do more than I thought, would have been invaluable to me. That’s what this course is all about.”

A similar targeted course started in July with Barnsley College students. Level 3 childcare student Sophie has already seen the benefits of the course on her fitness and wider life after just 3 weeks, saying; “The thing that I’m enjoying most about being part of this group is that I am meeting new people and learning new things. We should be spreading the messages in this course to other girls!”
